Gaza. A Satanic Perspective

So let’s start off with the disclaimers.

Firstly we do not speak for all Satanists. This is a blog where we express ‘our’ opinions as women who happen to be Satanists. There is plenty of information about us and our beliefs if you look around this blog. Secondly the title itself ‘a Satanic perspective’ will be off putting to anyone who doesn’t understand what modern Satanism is. Thirdly among Satanists there will be a wide divergence of opinions on this matter. We are of the left of centre, libertine branch of Satanic thought and belief. However, we do think that Satanic philosophy should and does require us to look at the situation in Gaza in particular ways.

Firstly we must disregard the religious element on both sides. While we acknowledge that religion does play a part in the conflict, we have to step back and say that both sides are equally delusional. The premise of both Judaism and Islam (and virtually all other religions) is wrong. The God of those religions is fictional. In the twenty-first century it doesn’t make sense to place any credibility in the ideas or dogmas of those religions. So whenever either side uses their religion to justify their actions, we have to call it out and say such a notion is ridiculous. It would be like using the story of Hansel and Gretel to justify banning gingerbread!

Secondly we must say things as they are. The present situation in Gaza was caused by an attack by the terrorist group Hammas. That attack, in which many people were murdered and many more were taken hostage, was horrific and evil. Hammas knew what the likely Israeli response would be. They wanted the present situation to happen because it makes Israel look bad in the eyes of the world. They have got exactly what they wanted and they are now reaping the reward by winning the moral argument. The response of Israel has been out of all proportion to the original attack. The actions of the present Israeli regime can be described as genocide according to any dictionary definition. People within the Israeli coalition government have openly said they want to eradicate the Palestinians in Gaza.

But we must be careful not to conflate things (which is what the most destructive forces on both sides want us to do). Hammas does not mean Gasa or Palestine. The majority of the people in the Palestinian lands just want to get on with their lives peacefully with as little political interference as possible (like most people in the world). The present government in Israel does not represent the will or the wishes of most Israelis. Indeed it is a minority government which is losing support on all sides. Both in Israel and around the world legal authorities have suggested that the present regime in Israel may have committed war crimes that the general population of Israel probably don’t approve of. In short there are Muslims of many different opinions and Jews of many different opinions all trapped in the disputed areas.

Next we must speak about the aspect of revenge. As Satanists we do believe revenge can be justified. Indeed it is part of being personally responsible for your own life and actions. We don’t have any moral objections to the concept of taking revenge. We have taken and would take revenge on certain occasions. Revenge for the Hammas attack is therefore justified in our opinion. But Satanists also believe in intelligence and therefore any act of revenge must be tempered by intelligent thought. ‘Will this action punish the one who transgressed against me? The answer is no. It will mainly punish people who were not involved in the Hammas attack. Moreover, it will be exactly the reaction that Hammas wanted. It will make Israel seem barbaric in the eyes of the world. To take this form of revenge will empower my enemies and cause long term harm to innocents and to myself. It would be stupid to take this form of revenge. (There may have been better thought out and more justifiable means of revenge;- but this was not the path that the Israeli government took).

We also need to take into account historical and political context, which in the case of Israel and Palestine is extremely difficult. News coverage is extremely biased and polarised on both sides. More worryingly even historical sources tend to be biased to one side or the other. With so many differing views as to the historical context that the present Gasa situation results from, it is very difficult to say with confidence that you know what really happened. We don’t claim to know or understand the historical and political situation perfectly. However, if you read around, there seem to be some facts that are hard to dispute. One is that the geographical area known as Palestine has been occupied by both Jews and non Jews for thousands of years. Overall it would seem that the non-Jews have outnumbered the Jews in that region for the majority of that time. The region has been occupied and ruled by a variety of countries and empires. With the tacit support of the winning powers after the second world war, the present state of Israel came into being following a Jewish insurgence against the British rulers of the time. After the Holocaust, western leaders seemed to feel the Jewish people deserved to have a home state, and have generally supported and protected Israel ever since. The local Palestinian population never really accepted this. (Why should they?) There have been wars and violent terrorism in the region ever since. Israel has frequently ignored U.N. resolutions concerning how the land of Palestine should be divided between the Jewish and Palestinian populations. According to international law, Israel has been illegally occupying some Palestinian territories for a long time.

In the ongoing protests and demonstrations about the situation in Gaza, those who tend to support the people of Gaza and criticise the actions of the Israeli government are frequently accused of antisemitism. Antisemitism is a form of racism characterised by prejudice, hatred and hostility aimed at Jewish people in general. We denounce and abhor all forms of racism. However, we feel that in this case the term antisemitism is too often being used to shut down any criticism of the state of Israel and it’s actions. Being disgusted by the actions of a particular regime does not mean you are prejudiced against all the people who share that regime’s ethnicity or religion. That is dumb thinking.

We would describe ourselves as anti-Zionists. As Satanists we couldn’t take any other position on that. Zionism is a Jewish nationalist movement that argues that there must be a state of Israel corresponding to the Land Of Israel according to Jewish Biblical tradition. Since we don’t believe there is any truth in the Biblical stories that form the basis of Jewish tradition, we cannot support a movement based on what we see as a fairy-tale. Again, it must be noted that not all Jews and not even all Israelis are Zionists.

Satanists don’t all subscribe to the same moral values. But that doesn’t mean we don’t have moral values. The authors of this blog see the genocide being committed in Gaza as morally wrong and politically stupid. We think it could lead to much more instability, violence and terrorism in the region (and around the world) for generations to come which will serve the interests of virtually nobody.

Watching an entire population being bombed out of their homes and then starved to death makes us extremely sad and angry. This shouldn’t be happening. All world leaders should be ashamed to be allowing this on their watch.

An Anniversary

It is five years since Lou and I got together. It probably doesn’t sound like much, but when you consider we live in different cities in different countries, that we were separated by the pandemic and then separated again while I spent 9 months in Cuba, that we both have very different but busy lives, that we are both actively polyamorous and pansexual, it is quite amazing that we are still an item!

It was never planned this way, and if it had been, I doubt if it would have worked. Our relationship has evolved organically. Neither of us are very romantic but we have somehow become significant parts of each other’s lives. And it still feels right.

I am posting about it here rather than in our personal blog because there is a satanic element to this anniversary and our relationship in general.

Lou was not a Satanist when we met. Philosophically we agreed on most things and I think that, judging by our hedonistic lifestyles, many people probably assumed we were both Satanists anyway. Moreover, among the people we hung out with there were quite a few people who identified as Satanists. However, Lou didn’t see the point of being identified with any particular religion or philosophy. I respected that. But as time went by and she got to know my family, things changed. She joined a few of our family’s meetings and rituals and started doing her own reading and research. A few months ago during our Saturnalia celebrations, she officially joined Sophie and Cassie’s Coven. She may even post on this blog occasionally in the future. Meanwhile the two of us are thinking of budding off from the main group and starting our own group, probably in Berlin…

So, while all our blogs have been very quiet for a long time, our Satanic journeys have been continuing…

To celebrate our anniversary, this is a clip from a blog I posted 5 years ago. It makes me cringe, I was so (relatively) innocent then! But to celebrate our anniversary, it makes me smile…

For my nineteenth birthday Sophie and Cassie took me to Berlin for the long Easter weekend. I have been to Berlin a few times before with my parents and once on a school trip. I already knew it was a great place to visit and hang out in. The first full day we did some sightseeing in the Mitte district and relaxed in the Tiergarten. In the evening we had a nice meal and went to an alternative club that Cassie knew well. As a result of that, we slept most of the next day. When we woke up we discussed our evening plans. My mother and Cassie wanted to go to the KitKat club; Cassie had been there once before. It was left up to me if I wanted to join them or do something on my own. They gave me lots of information/warnings about it. (Look it up on the internet, it’s very famous in Berlin; a kind of combination of techno and fetish/sex club). I was curious but didn’t want to be a burden on my mother’s fun. I was also nervous about fitting in and what to wear (they have a strict dress code which mainly involves not wearing much at all once you get in). And we were all a bit nervous about getting in at all, since the most famous Berlin clubs have very annoyingly picky bouncers at the door. Anyway, to cut a long story short, I went and all three of us got in.

The scene inside is probably how some Christians visualise hell. Most of the place is lit with a strange neon glow. There is a mechanical dragon which sometimes breathes real fire. There are crowds of people in every room dancing, chilling or getting off with each other and most are dressed in various forms of fetish wear, or are not dressed at all… There is erotic art on the walls and large screens often playing porn in the background. With or without their clothes on, you can’t always tell if the people dancing next to you are male or female, or somewhere in between… It is both terrifying and beautiful. To be honest, at first I was completely overwhelmed, and I did secretly think about leaving. Then two things happened…

First my mothers and I started chatting to this man. He was far older than most of the people there (old enough to to be my father, or grandfather even). He was a bit more conventionally dressed than most of the people and didn’t quite fit in. He confessed to us that he was a voyeur and that he just came to listen to the music and watch people. I think he sensed that I was feeling a bit out of place and the story he told us seemed to be directed at me.

He said that the first half of his life he lived in what was still communist East Berlin. He learned from an early age to keep things to himself. In his teens he realised he was gay but that was taboo at the time so he repressed it together with most of his opinions and kept his head down… Eventually he got into a loveless marriage to a woman which didn’t last long. When the wall came down things improved generally but he was so used to repressing things that he found it hard to change. Eventually, only a few years ago, he came to the KitKat club and kind of realised what he had been missing. But he felt he was already too old to change. He liked to watch people being themselves but he was still too repressed and shy to join in… And recently he found he had cancer and it is possible he will die within the next year. He said this made him think a lot about his life and his death. He said he doesn’t really regret anything he has done but he was full of regrets for the things he’s never done or even tried. And I guess his message was, ‘don’t be like him.” He sad, (I translate) “The world will never be perfect but at least today people have the freedom to be themselves. That’s a freedom you shouldn’t waste.”

The second thing was that later in the evening/morning when I was feeling a bit more self confident I met a girl who turned out to be a kind of soul-mate. We were dancing close to each other then we started chatting and flirting a bit (with each other and some guys we met). Nothing much more happened. Sophie and Cassie went off doing their own thing (checking in with me from time to time) and I spent the rest of the time dancing, chatting and generally having fun with this girl, who we shall call Louise… At the end of the evening (which turned out to be about ten in the morning!) we exchanged phone numbers and I went back to the hotel where I was staying with Cassie and Sophie.

In the late afternoon Louise phoned me and invited me to go again in the evening but she suggested we meet earlier at her place to get ready. I agreed immediately. I spent several hours at her place where we were trying on sexy underwear and helping make each other up. I also got her to cut my hair so I had a complete new look. And of course we were chatting and laughing and getting to know each other and getting quite stoned as well. For me it was great to meet somebody who has very similar opinions and way of life to me. She is not officially a Satanist, but philosophically very similar. She is a nursing student so she is a libertine on one side but also very caring about people and the world.

When we arrived at KitKat for the second time I felt ready. This time I was totally confident and at ease. I felt at home there. I got to know one of the DJs and quite a few of the regulars. I had a lot of fun with Louise and other people. I joined in with everything and went with the vibe of the place, the dancing, the drinking, the drugs, the sex and everything that makes KitKat unique… At one point I had a momentary out of body experience where I looked down at myself and thought this is me being the person I want to be… And then I went back to Lou’s place…

So that was the person I was at 19. I’m now 24, and yes, looking back, that was the moment I really found myself… The fact that it was also when I found Lou is not a coincidence. 🖤 We are still regulars at KitKat when I’m in Berlin. And hopefully Lou will make her debut in this blog soon.

Happy New Year

Our Beliefs

We wrote this during lockdown a few years ago now. It still holds true…

What follows is a list of the things that are important to us and which we can agree between ourselves. We have tried to avoid referring back to what Satanists should believe or what other Satanists argue or write about. The following is a summary of “our” version of Satanism.

Satanic Identity

To us, calling ourselves Satanists means that we identify with and support the character known as Satan or The Devil in Christian and Jewish literature (probably Islamic literature too but we don’t know enough about the way Satan is depicted in Islamic scriptures). However, (and it is a BIG HOWEVER) we don’t believe Satan is evil (in the way that is commonly understood) or that we should be or are evil; rather we believe Satan has been misrepresented and that that if you look between the lines and read with your mind open, Satan (even as described in the Christian Bible) is actually the hero and the liberator opposed to an oppressive god. Thus we believe in challenging orthodoxy of any type, we believe in using our own judgement and our own free will in all things. We believe knowledge is power and that we have a right to gain and use all the knowledge and power that is available to us. We choose to eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge and to grow to our full potential as a result.

We challenge conventions and taboos where we feel it is necessary to. We don’t believe the God of the Christian tradition is “good” or that anything held up as good by that religion should be accepted without challenge. Nor do we believe the example the god of the Judao-Christian religions sets and represents is anything to aspire to. We make up our own minds about what is good, bad or evil in any situation. Again we go back to the example of The Devil, who challenged and argued with god. We take Satan’s side.

The Bible

We don’t believe The Christian Bible (or any other religious scripture) is a literal account of anything that actually happened. We refer to it only because it informs the opinion of many people we disagree with. We believe the Bible and other scriptures are collections of stories and fables with at best tenuous links to anything that happened in reality. We do think some of the stories that are contained in such literature can be powerful and thought provoking but too often they are covered in many layers of other people’s interpretation and are primarily used to support religious social control.

Satan

We see Satan (as depicted in the sources already mentioned) as a symbol and archetype of opposition to religious authority and all authorities that try to control and restrict the will and the lives others. As Satan rebels, so do we.

As opposed to the majority of modern atheistic Satanists, we are “Theistic” in that we believe there is an actual energy or entity associated with the Symbol of Satan. We do not think of this entity as God in the way mainstream religions understand such a thing, nor do we worship Satan in the way other religious people worship their gods; but we do respect,  ally and connect ourselves with this entity through ritual and meditation.

Left Hand Path

The terms left and right hand paths are mainly only used and understood by those who have an interest in the occult or esoteric matters (and even here there can be disagreement about what the terms mean). We see both paths as equally valid and ultimately leading to the same thing; which could be summed up as personal and spiritual growth and enlightenment. Our understanding of the Left Hand Path we follow is based to a large degree on ancient tantric definitions. We break taboos and engage with the grittier, darker aspects of the world to enrich our experience and knowledge. While we do meditate and engage in rituals, the main focus of our path is engaging fully in all aspects of material life (no matter how others characterise it as good or bad) while preserving our personal and spiritual integrity.

Witchcraft and The Occult.

Many (but not all) Satanists are witches who study and engage in occult practices. We are Satanic witches who use what Anton LaVey described as greater and lesser magic. The shortest explanation of which is that we use all knowledge and power available to us. A large amount of that power comes from developing and strengthening our own will power. We also rely heavily on the use of psychology to manipulate situations in our favour. In addition to all that, we study and use all elements of witchcraft that have been passed down over the centuries, including the use of spells and potions and working with energies and entities which still come outside of what science can explain at present. As Satanists and Left Hand Pathers we tend to work often with entities/energies outsiders refer to as demons. Unlike Wiccans and many other Pagans, we don’t place any rules or limits on what we can use our magic for. Some would describe us as using “black magic” but we don’t see any value or meaning in that term. We use whatever form of magic is best suited to our aims. We acknowledge that we “could” harm people but find there is rarely any necessity for intelligent witches to embark on a course of nasty or harmful magic. That being said, we don’t rule out using magic that some would disapprove of.

Hedonism

Hedonism is an aspect of Satanism we fully engage in. Many other religions have put all sorts of limitations on how and when people can take pleasure in life and often seem to imply that pleasure itself is wrong, bad or selfish if not monitored or controlled by the “authorities”. We don’t believe this. We like to have fun and fully indulge our senses; moreover we believe this is psychologically good for us and helps us to grow in knowledge and wisdom. We tend to be very liberal in our attitude to things like sex and drugs and indulge in these things without guilt when we want to. We also enjoy and participate in all things cultural and artistic as often as we can. At the same time we firmly believe in balance and intelligence. Just because we give ourselves permission to indulge in all pleasurable things, doesn’t mean we have to or should do so all the time. We believe we are ultimately responsible for looking after our own bodies, so our desire for pleasure must always be balanced by what is good for our bodies and healthy for our minds.

Personal Responsibility

This is a very important concept for our family. We believe all people should take responsibility for their own lives and actions as much as they can (we acknowledge that some have greater ability and possibility to do this than others for economic, health and social reasons). We do not thank God or The Devil for our own good fortune; nor do we blame any outside entity for our own failings and mistakes. We believe that when using all the accumulated power and wisdom we can avail ourselves of, we (and all humans) have a great deal of potential power. The desire to fully realise that power is a large part of what makes us Satanists. However we do believe that with great power comes an equal amount of personal responsibility. It behoves us to think carefully about how our actions effect others and ourselves. We take credit for our success and try to learn from our mistakes.

Social Responsibility

We believe that our world is riven with many divisions that don’t serve anybody (including ourselves) well. Unlike some in the Satanic community, we don’t see ourselves as islands somehow isolated from, and insulated by, what happens in wider society; but rather, we acknowledge that everything that happens in our geographic community and the wider world can have an impact on our lives. Therefore we believe we must engage with the world in all ways and at all levels to end the divisions and injustices we abhor. We are against all forms of racial, sexual, gender and economic prejudice. We believe that a fairer, kinder, more inclusive world will ultimately enable us to live our own lives more fully and more totally in line with our Satanic principles. We also believe we must safeguard the environment of the world for future generations of enlightened souls. For all these listed reasons our political views and choices tend to be left wing/socialist/progressive. Individually we have each been described as Socialist-Libertarian in the various tests that go around social media.

Personal Morality

We consider ourselves to be moral people. We try to be kind and helpful to others when we can. We are loyal to each other and to our covens, family and friends. We try to think through the consequences of our actions where possible and act accordingly. However we do not strictly follow the rules set down by any religion or other authority. We don’t think it is always wrong to obey rules but we would never blindly accept or follow any rules or instructions without questioning and thinking about them first. We particularly disagree with many of the moral values and rules set down by the Judao-Christian traditions. We often use the Satanic Statements devised by Anton LaVey as a starting point for moral and ethical decisions, but we don’t even view those statements as rules which must be obeyed. We don’t believe there are any moral absolutes because we can think of exceptions for virtually any rule we can imagine. However we can think of very few reasons to excuse murder, and even fewer to excuse rape. In all things we must come to our own judgement. In matters of sex and sensual pleasure our moral values revolve around honesty and consent rather than outdated religious edicts. While we generally try to be kind and  helpful to everyone; we don’t believe in turning the other cheek when somebody wrongs us (unless we can see some advantage to doing so) and we reserve the right to take revenge in any way we see fit. We are all advocates for inclusive rights and equality for all races, all genders, and all expressions of sexual identity. We support responsible free speech but deplore presenting opinion as if it were fact.

Science and Learning

We are all interested in science and believe the scientific method (while not infallible) is the best way humanity has to understand the world and the universe we live in. We believe that learning as much as possible about all that interests us and growing as individuals in every way is a very large part of the reason for living.

Life after or beyond this mortal coil.

We are all agnostic about this and actually there is wide divergence and disagreement between the three of us about whether we have souls and, if so, what happens to them after death. What we agree on is making the most of the life we are living while we can.

Ritual, Blasphemy and Meditation.

While we generally dislike anything that reeks of religiosity, we have all come to value the three things mentioned in this heading. We see meditation (which can take many forms) as a very useful tool and exercise for strengthening will power and generally improving the health of your mind and body. We would recommend it to everybody. It forms the basis of most of our magical work and aids us in all our learning and study. It also comes into ritual and blasphemy. Blasphemy, in thought, words and actions is a powerful tool of self definition and helps break down the all pervading cultural conditioning of the society we live in. We see ritual as a psychological drama which also acts as a tool for focusing our mind on specific aims and opening doors in our subconscious.

Carl Jung Our Shadow Sides

“Where there is light, there must also be shadow.” If we did not call ourselves Satanists we would probably call ourselves “Jungians”. The philosophy and psychology of Carl Jung is central to our understanding of ourselves and life in general. There is very little he wrote that we don’t agree with (although none of us are expert enough to be qualified authorities on Jung, yet…). We agree with some of his more spiritual views but more importantly we agree with his views and teachings on Persona, Archetypes and Shadow. We believe it is important, probably essential, to explore and integrate our darker, ‘Shadow’ sides, in order to develop fully and holistically. We “know” our “light” sides, the kind, loving, socially acceptable aspects of ourselves that the world is not threatened by… We are discovering and owning our darker natures as well, in order to develop and grow as human beings and become more powerful, effective and “whole”. For us, Satanism is in many ways the gateway and route-map to that journey.

And Finally…

Another reminder, we are a group of three Satanic women linked by family. We speak for ourselves and not for Satanism in general. We have highlighted here the things the three of us agree on.

Hail Lilith!

We have written about our relationship with Lilith several times, just write Lilith in the search button on the right to get an in depth picture of how my family and I relate to her. Or for an overview of Lilith written by somebody else try following this link. https://journeyingtothegoddess.wordpress.com/2012/02/29/goddess-lilith/

This however is a short personal take on my feelings and beliefs related to Lilith as Goddess and Demon.

At various times and in different contexts she has been called The First Woman, The First Demon, The First wife of Adam, The Mother and The Queen of Demons, The First person to challenge god, the first person to be thrown out of Eden, the first rebel and the consort of Satan. She has been associated and compared with Goddesses of other pantheons such as Aradia, Hecate and Hathor/Sekhmet. And by her enemies she has been described as murderous and evil.

In many ways I see her as the symbol and archetype of womankind in the same way as Satan can be regarded as the archetype of mankind; both at their most undiluted, primal best.

Personally I don’t believe in the literal truth of any story of any god or goddess in any religion. However I think these stories are based on happenings and understandings (which include a connection to truths and entities beyond the human realm) and that these entities or egregores can connect with those who seek them out. This happens mostly with those of us who engage in occult practices, but could happen in other ways too. In any case I connected most strongly and fully with the entities Satan and Lilith. Perhaps that is simply a recognition of my inner self, perhaps it is something more… So what does Lilith represent to me?

The images I have posted here are the tamest ones I have in my collection so as not to offend WordPress. Most of the images in my own collection are much more sexually explicit. A large part of Lilith’s power and appeal stem from her overt sexuality; a power she controls and uses; a power many men and patriarchal societies fear. From the earliest traditions that mention Lilith, it is her sexual power that is feared and punished. And in modern society the potential power of women is still often feared. To put it simply, no matter how clever, rich and powerful a male may be, the Lilith within me could probably bend him to my Will using sex and seduction. This is how matriarchs often subverted Roman Caesars and how female spies get information from high ranking officials.

During the Second World War (and in many other conflicts) many women were employed to elicit secrets from and exert influence over the enemy using their sexual powers. Those who were caught were often tortured and killed brutally. Those who succeeded mostly had to keep quiet about how brave and clever they had been, and many were branded as whores, deviants or sluts even by their own side.

More generally in the patriarchal societies most of us live in, woman have been taught, trained and shamed to believe they can only enjoy and use their sexuality within rules and contexts created and governed by religions and the men who control those religions. Lilith lives in all of us who reject and rebel against that state of affairs.

Also in matters of sex and the psychology that underpins it, and from there all aspects of life, Lilith represents those of us who value and work with our shadow side. Lilith enjoys and values earthly pleasures and recognises that hedonistic leaning in others. She can be ‘nice’ when she chooses but she is not limited to being ‘nice’. She explores boundaries and sometimes strays into dangerous territories. There is real danger, and there can be negative consequences, but for Lilith and those of us who associate with her, that is the path that has been chosen.

Like Satan, Lilith personifies the Left Hand Path. A path through pain and pleasure, grit and grime that some of us choose because it is our nature. Some people may find growth and wisdom in other ways; I do not doubt that and I respect the enlightenment they obtain. But that is not my path to progression. My path is through the dark forest, the mists of fear and confusion, the soils composed of dying things which nurture new growth, and the dark distorted reflections in the forest lakes. In the midst of this mysterious landscape there is a beauty I recognise. And power I choose to use. Lilith was also the first Witch, and I am following her lead.

Why I Celebrate Samhain

Just a few words to explain why and how I, as a Satanist, celebrate Samhain (Halloween).

Firstly it is a family tradition. I come from a family of Satanic Witches. When Cassie came into our lives, she brought with her not only Satanism but a history and practice of witchcraft which owed a lot to her experiences as a Wiccan and Pagan. We integrated those things into our family and coven celebrations at this time of year. Since then it has become one of our favourite and most important seasonal celebrations.

Secondly I personally feel that this time of year is imbued with all the overtones and undertones of Satanic philosophy. It celebrates the dark and the forbidden; the shadow side of life and death. We remember those who have died. We confront our fears about death which makes living more vital. We allow ourselves to experience and celebrate the beauty that can be found in the darkness and the shadows. Nobody questions anybody for celebrating the sun rising into a blue sky on a warm summer’s day and basking in the warmth of the air. I enjoy that myself, but I also enjoy the cold and the damp mist on a dark Autumn night, spiders in the undergrowth, bats and owls flying in the moonlight… As somebody who studies nature and conservation I think it is important to recognise the beauty in all aspects of the natural world, not just the pretty sunlit things. Death and decay are part of what makes the world work.

And last but not least, I celebrate Samhain because I am a witch. There are all kinds of witches, I happen to come from a Satanic background, but Samhain is a time when the craft of all witches is held up and celebrated. Those of us who learn from nature and engage with the supernatural are generally not shunned in modern times as much as in the past. But we feel for those who went before us and at Samhain we feel their presence and energy and add it to our own. I really have felt the ‘thinning of the veil’ at this time of year and it is something I appreciate more as each year passes.

If the weather is not too bad where I live I will be involved in an outdoor ritual with my coven this Samhain. In previous years I have usually attended a Halloween party afterwards. This year I am inclined to conduct my own private ritual at home.

I have recently taken over the running of an old style message board for people with a spiritual background or interests. If you like to discuss things in writing, with time to compose your thoughts and replies, you might like to join. Asside from writing about the spiritual paths that interest you it is a place to discuss other interests and everyday life. It could be a place just to make friends. The only rule is to be nice and respect other members. If this sounds like something that would interest you, click on the following link.

Physical and Psychological Manifestations of Satanism.

I have been reflecting on the physical and psychological aspects of Satanism. More precisely, I have been thinking about the way people can be changed physically and psychologically when they fully dedicate themselves to Satanic beliefs and lifestyle. (I chose that phrase deliberately. I could have said Satan or Satanism. The problem is that even within the Satanic community there will be different interpretations of what that actually means. For some Satan is purely symbolic, for others Satan is a very real spiritual and/or physical entity. For still others Satan and Satanism would not be described in either of those ways. However, I think there might be a little more agreement or understanding about what it means to dedicate oneself to Satanic beliefs and lifestyle;- to stand apart from the normal conventions, to be critical of, and antagonistic towards, the mainstream and the status quo).

A male friend of mine, a Satanist in my coven, has recently been on a mission to improve his physique. Appearance, especially self image can be deceptive. He considered himself to be rather thin and scrawny looking and not attractive in the way he wanted to be. I have known him for a while and although he is not particularly my type, I never found him to be unattractive. However, I have noticed a change recently, and it is a positive one. He has occasionally tried visiting the gym and organising his own exercise regime previously, but by his own admission, he never really stuck to it and didn’t get any positive results. Then, about six months ago, he reached a point where he wanted to acknowledge and rededicate himself to his Satanic path and he combined this with a renewed attempt to improve his physique. Since then he has been attending the gym regularly and working out at home. He has combined this with meditation and magical work and the result has been quite spectacular. He has put on a little weight, but it is all well toned muscle and, yes, there has been a very positive change in the way he looks and presents himself and, perhaps more importantly in his self confidence. He doesn’t look or feel like the same person he was at the start of the year.

Now you could argue that most of the change this guy has manifested in himself is psychological… He reached a point where he became serious about changing himself, and went about it more seriously than he had done previously. He began to notice some improvement which boosted his self confidence. This boosted his willingness to go further, there was more improvement both physically and psychologically and so it became a circle of positive reinforcement which manifested the change he desired. I think that is probably 90% of it; however it was that dedication to Satan and the change of mindset that accompanied that which started the ball rolling. I don’t think that can be denied. Satan helps those who help themselves! Perhaps Satan is your inner self, perhaps Satan is an outside force; does it matter?

Cassie told me and others that when she transitioned from being a Wiccan to being a Satanist, there were physical as well as psychological changes which she noticed almost immediately. She kind of ‘came out’, telling people who had known her as a Wiccan or Pagan that she had become a Satanist. She did it in a big way, joining Satanic groups online and finding a Satanic coven pretty quickly. (Within a few years she was running her own Satanic coven together with my mother). She said that in the first few days after making a dedication to Satan and telling those closest to her about the path she had decided on, she felt like she was in a permanent state of orgasm. So much so, that she began to worry it could be unhealthy. That phase passed, but she was (still is) convinced that her breasts were significantly larger afterwards and she had to start buying bras with a larger cup size.

Again, much of Cassie’s story could be put down to psychology, she took a significant step in her life (it happened to be becoming a Satanist; perhaps it could have been something else…) which generated nervous excitement, the relief of finally accepting something about yourself in a positive way, a buzz which felt something like an orgasm… But could that alone have actually permanently increased the size of her breasts?

And then there was my mother Sophie… With her the changes were more psychological. She had been through some rough times and was carrying a lot of stress. When she became a Satanist she said it felt like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders and she felt she could relax for the first time in several years. Several minor health issues vanished immediately, she stopped getting a runny nose and eyes during the pollen season, an annoying rash behind her ears went away and most significantly her migraines stopped and never returned. Even I noticed that her skin tone and condition improved almost immediately. She looked…younger. Perhaps any positive turn could have encouraged these changes, but it would seem stupid to deny that it was, in fact, a dedication to Satan that was the catalyst for these positive changes.

I have regular contact with many Satanists through the group I attend, my mothers’ coven, and of course through many online groups. Many, perhaps even most of them, have told me that when they went through the process of becoming a Satanist (whether through a ritual of dedication, joining a group or coven, or just by speaking openly about it) they also noticed both physical and psychological changes in themselves. The psychological changes are probably most common and easier to understand. I guess making any big decision, particularly about something very personal such as your beliefs, lifestyle, gender identification or sexuality triggers a sense of relief, self empowerment and confidence.

To be honest there were periods where I felt jealous. I have been a practicing Satanist all my adult life and a bit before that… I have participated in grand rituals and small personal dedications. I have lived my life entirely by Satanic principles. I have performed greater and lesser magic. I have read a lot of Satanic writings. I have meditated. And I haven’t noticed any physical or psychological changes at all! My boobs are not an inch bigger, my skin hasn’t changed, my eyes are the same colour they always were… I didn’t experience any physical or mental transformation at all. It didn’t seem fair!

”If you came to Satanism looking for miracles, you joined the wrong club!” A friend of mine told me, and he was right of course. I felt slightly embarrassed. It’s not that miracles don’t happen; unexplainable things happen all the time, but that is not what Satanism is about. Satanism is about taking responsibility for yourself, not relying on a Fairy-Godfather to sort out all your problems. It is all about your own Will-Power, your own choices, your own morals and ethics and being prepared to live with the consequences of how you live.

Now I am a Theistic Satanist. I do believe that there is something which I call Satan which is a force to be reckoned with in its own right. But still, my reasons for being a Satanist are not to worship and adore a spiritual entity in the hope that he will grant all my wishes. I am a Satanist because I think the philosophy underlying Satanism is the correct one and the best one for the times we are living in. The ‘Theistic’ element of my own personal belief is an optional extra I have opened myself to.

On the other hand, my mother (Satanic Sophie) said to me, “You became a Satanist when you were on the cusp of adulthood. Don’t tell me your boobs are the same size now as they were back then! You were a quite shy, solitary sort of child and very innocent. Within a few years you were happy to be the centre of attention in many groups of people. You developed a self confidence which some people even now find quite intimidating. Your innocence was quickly replaced by a worldly wisdom and carnal understanding of yourself and others that some people never realise. Your mind and body are in tip top condition despite all the things you have been through and all the substances you have used (against my advice). You regularly get ‘A’s in all your papers and you have people lining up to offer you work when you graduate university. And the artwork you have tattooed on your skin doesn’t leave anyone in much doubt about where your loyalties lie. Don’t tell me The Devil hasn’t changed you!”

Don’t you hate it when your mother is right!

So where does that leave me with my reflections on how Satanism can change people physically and psychologically?

I don’t think there is any doubt that the process of dedicating yourself to Satan or Satanism carries with it psychological changes. In my experience those changes are mostly positive, but I can also see that if people choose this path for the wrong reasons there could also be psychological harm. It is not something to play around with. As for physical changes, the scientist in me thinks these do happen but are mostly the out working of internal psychological changes. But, I’m open minded on that and I think it probably comes down to something I said at the beginning; The Devil helps those who help themselves.

Moving On; Reintroducing My Satanic Sister.

The short version. Sophie and I have decided to take a backseat in this blog. We may occasionally post from time to time, or we may not. Leonie has agreed to continue as the main poster in the meantime.

Slightly longer version. Sophie and I have our hands full running our coven and doing the various jobs that pay our bills. More importantly we think we have said all we have to say on the subject of Satanism and don’t want to just repeat ourselves. Leonie, on the other hand, is only a bit younger than I was when I started this blog. She brings a freshness that we no longer have. We have all thought from time to time about starting a video blog, but in the end we value our privacy and we don’t want the extra ‘fame’ that would come from speaking on YouTube and social media. We don’t doubt that we could have that. But given that we often discuss intimate and controversial matters, we want to be able to retreat into the relative anonymity of a written blog. Besides that, we all feel that writing things down often brings a clarity of thought that you don’t get from people speaking on social media. In addition to all that, Leonie has her own ideas about where this blog could go and maybe how to reach a new audience within the scope of written media.

So with all that in mind, I’d like to reintroduce Leonie by means of a short interview. I will preface the interview by saying that when I first met Leonie she was just fourteen and I had just started dating her mother. In that context it was natural to think of her as a surrogate daughter. But ten years have passed and Leonie is an adult woman in her own right. I think of her more as a sister and friend now, a Satanic sister… She has met her own challenges in life and in her beliefs and she has set her own agenda. So let’s get to it!

Leonie, when did you first identify as a Satanist, and what did it mean to you at that time?

I think I was still 14, maybe 15. I was in a rapid phase of growing up, when childlike thoughts mixed with adult ideas and desires. You and my mother had just got together. I was happy for mum, but it was a bit of an adjustment to get used to the idea that my mum was together with another woman. I just hadn’t seen that coming. But I liked seeing you together. And I knew you were a Satanist and mum was thinking about becoming one and I was curious what it was all about. Also, if I’m honest I wanted to do something that would build a connection with both of you, so maybe that wasn’t the right reason at first… But then as I started reading the books you suggested to me and other stuff I found online, I felt like it was just saying what I already believed anyway. So at first it was about a connection with you and a kind of validation of things I already believed.

And then?

It very quickly became more and more important to me. I felt a kind of strength and self confidence growing in me just by identifying as a Satanist and being with other Satanists. It was a time, I suppose typical in your teens, when I was kind of angry about all the injustice and hypocrisy in the world. Satanism seemed to be saying something which should be listened to; about making up your own mind about things and not just accepting what society says is right. Of course it was also a bit rebellious, not against you and mum but against the world in general… But even with mum, I pushed some boundaries. I met my first boyfriend in a Satanic group which was much ‘darker’ than the group you and mum were running at the time. I felt like I wanted all elements of innocence squeezed out of me. And that kind of happened… He was older and a lot more experienced than me. I wanted to know how mum would react. She just let it run its course. It was a test of her Satanism as well as mine. In the end I think we both grew from it. But also by then, I was not just believing Satanism as a philosophy. I was living it. It was part of me.

In the meantime you have lived on your own in Vienna, you have been at university and you spent nearly a year in Cuba. You also identified as Pansexual, got involved in a particular kind of nightclub scene and have a long term but not monogamous relationship. What part did Satanism play in all of that and how have your beliefs changed or developed?

Satanism empowered and enabled me to live as I want without worrying too much what others think. I am probably not most people’s idea of a ‘good’ woman, but I am the person I want to be, living the life I want to live.

Of course my actual beliefs have changed a bit over the years. My understanding of what Satanism is, varies and evolves. Sometimes certain aspects seem more important than others. I would say that the core of my beliefs has always been the philosophical side; that part of Satanism which is atheistic and similar to humanism. But I am more and more influenced by the ritualistic and magical side of things… The things that could be called darker or more mysterious. The things that deal with inner psychology and outside forces.

Outside forces?

Yes, I have been leaning more to the theistic side of things. My scientific mind rebels against it, but I have felt and experienced things that are hard to explain otherwise. I still think it is mostly a psychological manifestation of my inner self but have come to the conclusion that it could be an outside force or entity, and I am okay with that. I like where it is leading me.

So are you saying you identify as a Theistic Satanist now? Those who know you will know this is quite a dramatic turnaround…

Yes, I am a Theistic Satanist. In a way it is a relief admit to that. I have also been studying Demonology which I incorporate into my ritual and magical workings. In the last few months I have felt a strong desire to fully immerse myself in the darker more esoteric aspects of Satanism. Perhaps it will be just be a phase, but it something I am learning from and something I want and need.

How do you see this blog going forward?

It is a place to write my thoughts connected to Satanism. It is entirely selfish in that way. It’s a place where I will be reflecting and working things out as I go along. It may or may not resonate with others. But for some it might be a better connecting point than many of the Facebook and online groups that are out there; most of which are highly toxic. Of course there is still all the stuff you and Sophie have written before, some of which I will repost with my own comments. And if people do enjoy reading my posts here, I might have some ideas for a less toxic way to discuss things either here or by re-purposing our old message board.

Well, I am looking forward to seeing where you take things. I was born in a nominally Catholic family. Then I became a Pagan and a Wiccan before fully converting to Satanism. That is the perspective I began from when I started this blog. On the other hand you have been living as a Satanist since your teens in a family dominated by Satanism. I think you will bring a different and much less apologetic dimension to this blog. I am genuinely curious how things will go.

But for now, after many years of blogging, this is Cassie, un unrepentant Satanic Crone, signing off. Dark Blessings everyone.
